To 'thon or not to 'thon

In January, the wonderful Tika at Reading the Bricks hosted a mini-readathon. My enjoyment of this event was not mini, however, and now we're a month away from Dewey's 24-hour Readathon and I am sorely tempted, dudes. Sorely.

Plus, lookit the pretty picture. I'd totally read in a field right now.

The thing, though, that's stopping me from linking up right this second is that I have no idea where I'll be or what I'll be doing on April 27th. The Neil and I are right in a transition phase between his finishing up school in this city and us moving to another. So, what if we're in the midst of moving at the end of April (please, God)? A readathon requires planning and snacks and putting books on hold. What am I going to do if I suddenly can't participate, cancel said holds?

Oh, wait. I guess I could cancel said holds. Well, alright then! READATHON! I'll wait to sign up until it really seems like I'll be able to do it, but it is booked in my mental calendar. Ah, man, I am going to read ALL the books.

So, what about you guys? Will you be participating in this years 'thon? Have you 'thoned in the past? Any advice for a first timer? I'd love to hear about your tried-and-true snacks and books.

  1. I've never done the Dewy-thon because, like you said, the planning and commitment. That said, it always does look like fun.

  2. Oh shit dude, signing up ain't no thang! (Sorry. I've been watching The Wire loooooads!) Loads of people say they're going to do stuff and then don't do it. You know how it is!

ANYWAY. I have done... *counts on fingers* 3 Deweys readathons now? I looooove them, but I am acutely aware of the need to sleep that I have, so i kind of just read until bedtime, sleep normally and then read again when I wake up. It's awesome, and tiring, and then awesome some more. Yeaaaah, I'm definitely signing up. ;)

    1. I have heard such good things about The Wire.

And that's true about signing up and then not doing stuff. I have certainly set a precedence for this. I think I was thinking that if I signed up and then didn't do it, the internet would delete my blog and then come to my apartment and burn all my books. That would be the worst.

  3. I... I think I will also do this. Maybe I will have an audiobook and some knitting ready for when my eyes get tired...

We should plan snacks because as we all know, those are the most important part.

  4. I love the Dewey's readathon, if only because it's like the biggest readathon ever and there's something super-cool about reading along with hundreds of other people. You should totally sign up, it's not like the penalize you or anything if you end up being too busy!

If you do get to join in, I totally recommend lots of caffeine, and short, breezy books. If you have any graphic novels you've been meaning to read, it's the perfect time for them. Also, it's fun to attempt to stay up for the full 24-hours but that's damn near impossible, so you know... it's okay to plan on sleeping or naps.

ALSO, there's a different readathon happening that Wednesday the 24th. So as you get closer and Saturday looks too busy, you could sign up for Wednesday instead if you wanted. I'm aiming to do both - ALL THE THONS!

(Here's the thingy for the weekday readathon: http://loveatfirstbook.com/2013/03/22/weekday-read-a-thon-april-24th/ if you wanna check it out.)

    1. I am getting more and more excited for this. I'm so glad you're all reading, too! And thank you for the graphic novel tip - excellent idea.

I love that you're doing both the 'thons! You are a reading MACHINE. I am not worthy.

  5. I have tried to do this for like two years now. And I keep getting waylaid for some reason or another. But THIS TIME. IT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME. Mostly because my voice teacher's out of town and I will have weird amounts of free time.

    SO MUCH FUN.

    1. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST 'THON EVER. Dewey's Read-a-thon won't know what hit it. It'll be like, "Oh, hey, looks like our awesome factor went up 9,001% this year. I wonder if it has to do with ALL THESE AWESOME PEOPLE WHO KEEP TALKING ABOUT HARRY POTTER AND WILKIE COLLINS?!" It does, Dewey's Read-a-thon. It does.

  6. I sort of completely failed Tika's mini-readathon by sleeping through most of it and then also leaving the house for several hours. But you know WHAT...I'm signing up for this thing. I'm DOING it. (Signing up, that is. We shall see about the actual readathoning.)

    1. I think if you read or post at all it totally counts. You didn't fail Tika's at all! You gave us all a reading room to be jealous of. And a dog mascot, which is important. Readathoooooon!
